133. Gnomeageddon…Frosty’S Forest Fiasco

Began this ornament by turning some offset Christmas trees, then turned a couple of miniature Gnomes wandering in the forest. Finally turned three spheres (my first) to make Frosty. Somehow it seemed right to make Frosty a ferocious snowmaking creature…and thus Gnomeageddon. For full effect, please turn up volume when watching the video in the link below.

Tree of Life made for my mother, a bird and bird house lover. The top nest has her (pink bird) sitting in the nest with my father (blue bird) outside the nest looking down on us all from heaven. The six bird houses represent her six, very different children. The mushrooms below representing her 19 grandchildren in appropriate groups below each birdhouse. The pieces were created using FOG (found on ground) wood as we grew up without much money, often making wreaths and other holiday decorations from supplies harvested from the woods behind our house.

356. The Battle For Christmas

With Christmas just weeks away, the Vikings take on the North Pole Penguins in the annual Battle for Christmas. Even though the Vikings have a nasty reputation, the Snowmen will referee to keep it a friendly game. Every year I make each member of the family a new Christmas decoration. Each Viking has a unique weapon. I started back in July when I finally found the fake fur I was looking for. The whole display is 23 Vikings and 30 penguins. The penguins are walnut and maple with a friction finish. The snowman is poplar and walnut with a CA glue finish. The Vikings are spalted maple and lots of leftovers with a friction finish. The weapons have a clear coat of lacquer. The red beards were painted with craft store paint. The trees are spalted maple with green stain.

405. Miniature Bird House On Hand Forged Stand

Hollowed branch bird house with turned top and bottom, all from Southern Magnolia wood salvaged from small tree (5” diameter trunk). It had been planted by a friend’s Mother (before she passed away) for her Father, who had passed away a couple of years before. It was run over and demolished by a drunk driver. The two little Cardinals (M & F) [eBay] represent her Mother and Father. The hand forged display stand was made by my wife (Beverly Coker) in our blacksmith shop.

413. The Angel Within

A few weeks ago I made this ornament from some maple scraps I had lying around. Believe it or not, I succeeded in making this on the first try. However, when I tried to duplicate it, I was met with failure. I have tried to make it several times. However, this will be a one of a kind ornament.

i think there should be separate contests for each different type of ornament. choosing only 5 from a list of 400+ only leaves so many great ornaments left with no recognition.
